I also find winter to be a time full of colour, at least when you’re in nature. There are so many hues of brown, orange and red and even some plants are at their most beautiful in winter. I think I’ve always felt most myself by the sea. There’s just something about that salty air and being able to see the horizon that calms my soul like nothing else.

Absolutely! And brown and orange are such gorgeous colours with so much variety. Nothing like it with the contrast of blue sky too (when it does appear). Ah interesting, I do adore the sea. It makes me feel humble being with something so powerful and enormous, a lovely reminder of things bigger than us.

I struggle with winter. Here in the NW United States, we still have a lot of snow with more on the way. I have been doing a lot of sketching from map crunch which has helped me see shapes and color in winter landscapes. I feel it’s helped me have a better perspective about winter. Although I am more than ready for spring!

Snow is such a rarity for me - it only ever lasts a few days all winter and that’s only if I’m lucky! I cannot imagine it being there all winter, like a huge cloak for all the colours. I love using mapcrunch too, hope some colours appear as it thaws

I always feel deeply myself, and deeply in tune, when I am in a forest. I live by the shore now, which has its own great energy and certainly beats living in a city centre like I have done for the last 24 years, but trees are my jam.

I do adore being both by the coast and in a forest - the feeling is different for me too, (perhaps I'll explore this topic in more detail in my next newsletter!) Trees are more effected by the seasons, maybe that contributes...?

I read somewhere years ago that different people connect to different landscapes - some people are waterside people, some are montain people, some big sky folk and others are forest people. No idea, I do love all landscapes but trees are magical.

Oh I love that concept! And I wonder what it is that draws us to something specific. Can you remember where you read it by any chance? Sounds fascinating, definitely something I want to explore in more detail

As a born and raised hardcore Londoner (now ex-Londoner) I'm so glad to hear you are not experiencing it as unfriendly! I always said that London is actually a very friendly place - once you 'break the bubble' that people walk around in, they will be warm and helpful! Since moving to Bavaria, I have also completly changed how I view Winter. I used to wish it away, I always found it so depressing, but now here, living by a forest, I marvel at the amazing range of colours I see every day. I honestly love Winter now, there is so much beauty in nature at this time of year. Maybe it is getting older! But it does feel good to be at peace with a season that used to be a struggle.

I agree! I've had many helpful and pleasant interactions with strangers. Oh I can imagine experiencing Winter in a forest would be incredibly different! How fascinating. I think I also enjoy the slower pace of Winter, perhaps that allows us to notice more?
